Algorithmic control in work organization via digital platforms: a systematic literature review

The advent of platform work associated with the financialization of the economy has promoted several changes in the organization of the work environment. The objective of the article is to present the state of the art on the literature that approach algorithmic control in platform companies and verify the main effects of this management method in this organizational context. For this, a systematic review and bibliometric analysis of the literature was carried out. As a result of the bibliometric analysis, an overview of the most relevant works is presented, the context of the countries that carried out the research, the journals that published the most articles and the main topics and characteristics of the theme based on the analysis of networks. In the results of the qualitative analysis, four main effects of algorithmic control on online work platforms were identified (autonomy x heteronomy; job insecurity; algorithmic activism and specific regulation for platform companies) and their relationship with the future of work. The main contribution of this study consists of mapping the literature and directing future research to approach the theme from the four identified effects.
